Accommodating a maximum of 16 guests in its eight reed and thatch chalets, Xugana Island Lodge promises a very private experience. Each luxurious chalet is tucked away under giant waterside trees and features a private wooden deck that affords inspiring views over an unspoilt delta wilderness. En suite bathrooms accompany each chalet and an overhead fan keeps things cool in summer.

Xugana’s lounge, bar and main dining area are set under thatch at the main lodge but when it comes to dining, guests can also enjoy alfresco suppers in the outdoor boma, a traditional eating area, or even out on Xugana Lagoon itself. The lodge’s unique floating platform is a honeymoon classic, where a silver-service meal is laid out under the stars. Guests at Xugana will also appreciate the camp’s refreshing swimming pool as well as the conviviality of the communal lounge, complete with epic delta and sunset views.

A remote island location means Xugana Island Lodge is a classic water-based camp, offering game viewing and other activities by boat, canoe and on foot. Early morning boat safaris head off in search of rare antelope and delta birds as well as more familiar animals such as elephants, lions and giraffes that are often seen crossing between islands. Guided walks give guests the chance to engage with the Okavango on a more sensory level, and the opportunities for bird watching at Xugana are endless. In the afternoon, take a slow cruise out onto the lagoon, cast a line overboard and soak up the views until sunset – it doesn’t get much better.

Perfect

We are six older but experienced travellers who usually do our own planning. Luck led us to Safari Online and Walter. His ideas proved spot on. Throughout our planning Safari Online have been helpful, always answering emailed questions, no matter how basic, straightaway. We’ve had probably our best ever holiday in years of travel, everything went smoothly. Pickups and transfers were on time. Staff in all the places we stayed were friendly and helpful. I can’t think of one adverse remark except maybe seeing a lion that wasn’t asleep, though I think if it could have been arranged Walter would have done so.
