Xakanaxa Camp

One of the most well-rounded camps in the Okavango Delta, Xakanaxa (pronounced Ka-Ka-Na-Ka) is also one its longest established.

One of the most well-rounded camps in the Okavango Delta, Xakanaxa (pronounced Ka-Ka-Na-Ka) is also one its longest established. Set on the Khwai River in a famously game-rich corner of the Moremi Game Reserve, Xakanaxa Camp offers land and water-based activities all year round, and has been designed not just as a child-friendly camp but one that can accommodate wheelchairs too.

There are 12 walk-in East Africa-style tents at camp, each with lovely views over water. Enormous riverside trees provide plenty of shade, and the honking of nearby hippos reminds you that Xakanaxa Lagoon is just a few metres away, home to hippo families and sly-eyed crocodiles.

If you can’t decide between a water camp and a land-based camp for your Okavango Delta experience, then friendly and informal Xakananxa Camp provides the solution: start the day with a thrilling game drive and follow it up with an afternoon boat and canoe trip, returning to a candle-lit camp as the sunset fills the sky with colour.

Lodge Highlights:

  • Water & land-based game viewing
  • Family & wheelchair-friendly camp
  • Prime position in a game-rich enclave
  • Sprinkler-cooled tented suites

Overlooking the famous Khwai River, each suite at Xakanaxa is a study in classic tented luxury. An adjoining bathroom ensures comfort and privacy, two qualities reflected in the suite’s wooden deck, affording guests magnificent Okavango Delta views. Guests will also find a wealth of amenities to make their stay extra special: suites come with battery recharging points, gowns and a hair dryer as well as room safe, wet season ponchos and warm liners. But best of all is the tent’s unique cooling system: a conventional ceiling fan is augmented by Xakanaxa’s ‘sprinkler’ system of cooling mist – most welcome in summer!

Xakanaxa Camp’s setting in a famously productive area of the Moremi Game Reserve means the focus is firmly on game viewing. The game viewing is excellent all year round and the region is well known for its lion and leopard populations as well as being a hotspot for the rare wild dog.
