The Savute region of Botswana’s Chobe National Park is one of Africa’s most rewarding safari destinations. A swathe of grassland fed by an ephemeral waterway, Savute is a place of giant elephant bulls, marauding lion prides and scarred hyena clans.

Experience Savute from the candlelight ambience of Savute Under Canvas, a mobile tented camp that delivers the sort of luxurious safari of which Hemingway would have approved. The camp moves between private sites, each of its five luxury tents enjoying the services of a butler. Game drive vehicles take a maximum of six guests to ensure optimal game viewing conditions, and the whole experience is personalised thanks to the excellent guides and staff.

A great combination with a water-based camp in the Okavango Delta, Savute Under Canvas offers the comforts of a safari lodge with the authenticity and romance of walk-in tents and bucket showers. Savute can be enjoyed throughout the year but it is at its driest from May to October. The early summer period (December to early January) sees a local zebra migration and impala herds giving birth, both events attracting concentrations of predators.

About Savute Under Canvas

The Tents

There are only five tents at Savute Under Canvas, each serviced by a butler and well spaced for privacy. Featuring either a double or twin beds, the tents have a small shaded porch with chairs. They are well equipped with everything from luggage racks to backgammon sets. There is no electrical power in the tents but guests can recharge batteries at the main tent.

Each room has an en suite bathroom with a gravity-fed flush toilet and traditional bucket shower -hot water is provided on request. Towels, soap, shampoo, body wash and body lotions are all supplied.

Its mobile, temporary nature makes Savute Under Canvas a modestly appointed camp compared to Savute’s permanent lodges but you’ll want for nothing. Meals and drinks are served in the convivial mess tent, and outside under the stars on fine nights. The camp has a cheerful collection of books, magazines and board games to enjoy, and few guests will forget the camaraderie of the camp’s fire pit where stories are swopped long into the night.

Game drives are the focus at Savute Under Canvas. Its guides have a reputation as being among the best in the area and they begin the experience with early morning drives. Setting off at dawn, you’ll track predators on the prowl before returning for a hearty brunch and siesta. After a high tea you head out again in the late afternoon. This is the time to watch animals drink at the Savute Channel or at well-used waterholes. In the dry winter season, you can expect dozens of bull elephants clustered around water.

Savute is just as good during the summer wet season. Stay at Savute Under Canvas for an insight into the zebra migration and for good chances of seeing a kill. With Savute’s impala herds giving birth, many predators such as wild dog and cheetah move into the region.

We used Safari Online to put together a mid-range Botswana trip for a group of four going to three different camps and then onto Vic Falls.
