Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve is one of Botswana’s most rewarding safari destinations. Protecting a third of the Okavango Delta, it is a magical mix of waterways winding between secluded islands, woodlands and lily-covered lagoons. This rich diversity of ecosystems makes for extraordinarily beautiful scenery – and some seriously good game viewing too!

Although part of the world’s largest inland delta, Moremi is not all the watery wilderness that you might expect. To the east, a peninsular of dry land called the Mopane Tongue includes the wildlife hotspots of the Khwai Riverfront and Xakanaxa Lagoon. These regions, together with exclusive Chief’s Island (the largest landmass in the Okavango), are the best places to see Moremi’s predators and herds.

Set off on game drives across wide-open grasslands, onto the hunting grounds of lion prides and wild dog packs. Elephants and buffalo herds gather on sunny riverbanks and leopards rest in the branches of giant riverside trees. Along with thrilling game drives, many of Moremi’s camps and lodges offer boat or mokoro safaris too. Cruising reed-lined waterways is a great way to see the region’s rich birdlife along with local specialities such as red lechwe antelope.

It’s worth noting that Moremi was the first sanctuary in Southern Africa to be proclaimed a reserve by the local people. The Ba’Tawana set aside the reserve back in 1962, and it is still the only region of the Okavango Delta to be formally protected. Wildlife here is relaxed around vehicles and the game viewing is excellent at all times of year. That said, the best time to visit Moremi is the dry season months of June to October when the floodwaters arrive and animals flock to this lush oasis.
