Jao Camp

Jao Camp Overview

Tucked under majestic riverside trees and facing miles of unspoilt wetlands, Jao Camp can be considered one of the best-located camps in the Okavango Delta as well as one of its most luxurious. Its island setting in a private concession assures exclusivity, and with facilities ranging from a spa and plunge pools to a gym and photography hide, Jao Camp is perhaps the best appointed.

The secluded, romantic setting appeals to honeymooners but Jao Camp is also a destination for the traveller who wants to enjoy a diverse and comprehensive Okavango Delta experience. Game drives and mokoro (dug-out canoe) excursions are balanced by boating and guided walks, and there are opportunities to enjoy spot-lit night drives and full-day 4X4 safaris.

The camp’s nine tented and thatched suites are spread out along the shaded tree line, each one a study in refined, designer elegance. Raised and with delta views, their enormous bedroom and living area flow onto a wooden deck, complete with private sala and day bed – perfect for an afternoon siesta. Remote and accessible only by air, Jao Camp makes an excellent addition to an itinerary that includes lodges in the Chobe National Park or the Kalahari region.

  • Outdoor Viewing Deck & Private Sala
  • Full En Suite Bathroom
  • Hammock, Day Bed & Outdoor Shower
The nine designer suites at Jao Camp are among the largest, most luxurious and well appointed in the Okavango Delta. Set in a lush, jungle-like setting, each is raised off the ground and wrapped in a wooden viewing deck, home to easy chairs, a hammock and even an outdoor sala with daybed. Glass doors slide back to reveal the polished wooden floors and muted organic colours of Jao’s sumptuous canvas and thatched suites, their four-poster beds draped in a mosquito net.

Each suite has a full en suite bathroom with claw-foot bathtub and indoor and outdoor showers. You’ll also find a comfortable sitting area, a writing desk and table plus stocked mini bar and tea and coffee-making facilities. Guests can also spend a night outside in their sala, or for the ultimate Okavango overnight, the camp offers an under-the-stars sleep-out on their raised platform away from camp.

The Lodge Facilities

  • Two Plunge Pools
  • Spa & Gym
  • Restaurant & Bar
  • Viewing Deck
  • Reference Library
  • Curio Shop & Lounge
Standing under massive riverine trees, Jao’s imposing main lodge is built over two levels. The lower level, home to a lounge and library as well as curio shop, flows outside onto a large wooden deck that surrounds the camp fire. The upper floor is home to the dining area and bar along with another lounge – both floors are richly decorated in wooden sculptures and craft pieces, giving the lodge an elegant, refined atmosphere.

Its facilities and suites connected by raised wooden walkways, Jao Camp also features two separate plunge pools, a wellness spa offering massages and beauty treatments, and a small gym complete with everything you need for a workout plus an Okavango view. Dining is enjoyed in the main dining area or in the privacy of your private viewing deck or sala.

Activities at Jao Camp

  • Day & Night Game Drives
  • Mokoro (Canoe) Excursions
  • Full-day Safaris
  • Guided Walking & Birding
  • Catch-&-Release Fishing
  • Boat-based Game Viewing
Jao Camp lies on a small island overlooking vast floodplains and unspoilt, permanent wetlands. The juxtaposition of water and land means Jao offers 4X4 game drives as well as boating and mokoro (traditional dug-out canoe) safaris while its location in a private concession enables Jao Camp to offer spot-lit night drives as well as guided walking safaris.

An area of grazing antelope herds, passing elephants and big cats, it’s also a place famous for its birding: the camp’s raised hide sits some twenty minutes from camp and offers excellent opportunities for wildlife photographers and bird watchers. It also offers the more adventurous travellers the chance to enjoy a night away from camp – the ultimate in sleep-outs! Other activities include catch and release fishing in season, and full-day game drive safaris, complete with picnic lunch in the most alfresco of settings – a game-rich island in the Okavango Delta.
