Tau Pan Camp

One of only a few camps with access to the off-radar Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Tau Pan Camp offers the chance to discover this legendary safari destination in unbridled comfort. Set on a low ridge with sweeping views, this luxurious camp overlooks Tau Pan and its permanent waterhole – and not for nothing has Tau been so named. Tau means lion in Setswana and this camp lies at the heart of one of Botswana’s most famous predator centres.

Game drives with expert guides take you into the heart of the wilderness, staking out dry-season waterholes where big cats lurk. The rainy summer is a time of grazing springbok herds and their young, preyed on by everything from jackals to lions. Migrant birds arrive – eagles and bee-eaters, wildfowl and waders – making for astonishing bird watching. Nature walks can also be enjoyed. Led by San Bushman guides, these walks showcase the smaller details of the environment – animal tracks, bird calls and medicinal plants.

Tau Pan Camp is a small and intimate lodge, making it perfect for honeymooners or privacy-seeking couples. Its nine chalets are all en suite and feature a private viewing deck with comfortable chairs. One unit is a four-sleeper, ideal for families with younger children. Accessed by air or road transfer from Maun, the camp makes a great ‘desert and delta’ combination with similar accommodation in the Okavango Delta or Moremi Game Reserve – ask us for more details.

Activities at Tau Pan Camp

  • Morning, Afternoon & Full Day Game Drives
  • Waterhole Game Viewing & Stargazing
  • Nature Walks with Bushman Guides
  • Bird Watching

Set in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve itself, Tau Pan Camp offers morning and afternoon game drives, augmented by short nature walks with San Bushman. The drives are led by an experienced guide and tracker while the vehicle’s elevation and open-sided nature makes it a great photographic base. It’s also one of the best destinations in Botswana to spot smaller and more elusive animals such as wild cat, aardwolf, meerkat and honey badger.

Dry-season game viewing is often based around the last few water sources where predators launch ambushes on thirsty antelope, giraffe and wildebeest. In summer, the rains turn the Kalahari green and the new-born springbok lambs attract big cats and wild dogs. Summer is also highly recommended for bird watching: thousands of migrant birds arrive to fill the air with colour and song. Full-day game drives are recommended at this time of year, ranging deep into the Kalahari grasslands.
