Jack’s Camp

An extraordinary destination deserves equally out of the ordinary accommodation; multi award-winning Jack’s Camp, set on the edge of the spell-binding Makgadikgadi Pans, doesn’t disappoint. A long-established lodge, Jack’s Camp was created to give safari travellers a taste of the glory days when mess tents were decked with antiques and art pieces, and suites came with Persian rugs and four-poster beds.

Loaded with history and radiating a quirky charm, Jack’s Camp is one of the most unique in Botswana. Its ten stylish tented suites look out over golden Kalahari grasslands with the shimmering salt pans in the distant. Remote and off-grid (lamps and candles provide illumination), the camp is nevertheless well appointed and ideal for returning travellers or those in search of a safari with a difference – combine it with the Okavango Delta for a superb ‘desert and delta’ experience.

It’s also perfectly placed to deliver thrilling game drives as well as adventurous quadbike explorations on the pans. The Kalahari is surprisingly rich in animals and the camp’s expert guides track big cats and wild dogs, and will take you to interact with a habituated meerkat family. In the green summer months, herds of zebra and wildebeest pass through the area and there are always opportunities to spot the Kalahari’s more unusual animals such as honey badger, wild cat and brown hyena.

The camp’s ten tented suites lie under rustling palm trees on the edge of the Kalahari grasslands, each a study in colonial-style comfort and extravagance. A viewing deck with easy chairs accompanies each tent as does an en suite bathroom, complete with flush toilet and shower; an outside shower is discreetly located for you to enjoy in the warm Kalahari sun or under a ceiling of stars.

Jacks Camp Facilities

From wall-mounted skulls and art pieces to mahogany furniture and an antique billiard table, there’s not much that you won’t find in the camp’s much talked about lounge, dining room and bar. Guests can browse through the reference library (registered as a national museum!) and gaze at old maps, faded photographs and charts, a legacy of the camp’s founder.

A swimming pool provides welcome relief on hot Kalahari afternoons while the communal fire pit is popular on winter evenings. Jack’s Camp is off-grid and relies on candles and lamps for illumination at night; a generator provides limited up-time but is enough to recharge camera and video batteries. The camp prides itself on serving some of the best cuisine of any lodge, enjoyed in the fairytale ambience of the dining tent or under the stars.
